The fact of the matter is . . .

I was feeling down and angry at the world so I closed my blog off because I felt that my Q&A was too depressing and well, angry. Now I don't want you to think I had a horrible day or don't love being a mom. These are just thoughts I've had and they were kind of building up. I've mulled it over for a few days and decided to open it up, not delete the post, and if people really want to know the truth without judging me too harshly, well then, there it is.
I have discovered though, how to combat these moods of negativity:
Peace and Quiet.
"What?" you say.
Here is how you get peace and quiet according to Asher. He told me today he knows how to get peace and quiet and showed me how. So, if you need a little peace and quiet, here's what you do:

And this is what Eden is doing right behind Asher.

(That's right, coloring on my piano books. Now you understand why I need a little peace and quiet.)

"Wow"

So, reflections is a national PTA thing where kids use their creative skills (spurred on by mom/dad) to create a project that reflects the theme. This year's theme is "wow". I'm sorry but can you say cheesy? Anyway, Mara wrote a little poem this summer that I thought would be a good starting point for a song. She wrote all the lyrics with a similar theme as the poem and then I had her sing it to whatever melody she wanted. We had her add a bell part as well and voila. . .a song is born. She's no prodigy but it's cute and sweet and she really enjoyed doing it and feels a sense of accomplishment.

(Don't you love my awesome photoshop skills? Hey at least I got the MP3 on here. You have no idea what a task that is. You can't just upload an MP3 to a blog.)

Wednesday's Q&A: Questions to which there is no answer

Q. Why is it that no matter how early I go to bed I still feel tired during the day?

Q. Why is it that no matter how late my kids go to bed they still wake up early?

Q. Why is it that I am such an emotional crier?

Q. Would I be a better mother if I only had one child?

Q. How is it that no matter how hard I try my house is always messy?

Q. Why am I always engaged in power struggles with my daughters?

Q. Why can't people be honest with eachother? Why do we have to be so quick to judge and turn our backs on eachother?
Story: Last week at the library a little girl came up to me and said "Can I be her best friend?" pointing to Mara. I thought it was so cute and sweet but it also made me think about why it is people are so afraid to get close to eachother, let others in, be honest. We all have baggage. We all have issues, things we are working on. What brings us closer together is our ability to share and uplift. There are some women I know that I feel like asking "why is it that you're so afraid to let people in?" Why, when I offer to do some simple thing or to give some little thing you have to say no? Are you afraid of looking weak? Or what it might show about you?
I know this is pretty dull and disheartening but it's what's on my mind.

Wednesday's Q&A: A picture is worth a thousand words

This is a long one but it doesn't require too much reading so don't give up.Also, I'm know I'm no photographer and don't have an artistic eye. Please. It is completely unnecessary to point that out to me.
Q. What do you no longer have to go on a TV talk show to have done?
A. I found this ad in my Sunday paper. That gnawing fear can be cleared up in the privacy of your own home. I love that it says "For Questions only DNA can answer." Really, shouldn't we be able to answer that without the help of DNA? And, it also says "not available in New York State". Why in the WORLD would that be the case? I think they may desperately need it there. Second to Las Vegas, maybe.
Q. Speaking of, what the . . .how is it that your kids have reddish hair? (I get asked this ALL the time.)

A. Once upon a time, Jason had hair. And it was red. I'm glad I have an excuse. I feel bad for all my friends with redheads and no reason other than genetics of course. They get the milkman/postman/UPS guy question A LOT. No joking.Q. Is that Jason with a hair transplant? (Also a common question.)
A. No (he wishes), that is actually my nephew Austin with Eden. But don't worry, even Asher asked if it was dad with hair.
Q. What's Eden so satisfied about in this picture?A. In case you can't tell, she climbed on top of the piano to the treat box I keep for piano students; got a box of nerds and helped herself.
Q. Why is Eden on the TV in this picture? (Is she always climbing?)
A. She is trying to get the CD player on to listen to Hannah Montana. No Joke. So not my child. (And YES, always.)
Q. ON the subject of "not my child", what type of commentary does Mara give as she reads her books?
A. It makes me wonder if my outfits would be "cute" or "not cute".
Q. How can you tell it's cold out and that I'm lonely and bored?

A. I made these chocolate cookies with peanut butter chips despite the fact that we have a whole bowl of Halloween candy. I don't even like chocolate. But these are good. Unfortunately for me. (But good for all the rest of you who secretly wish I would gain weight. Yah, I know who you are.)
Q. What did I find on my counter after Jason cleaned out his old desk?
A. You can see where he likes to eat. (Don't let the picture deceive you, this bag is huge.)
Q. What brought a smile to my face today?

A. Well, many things, but this in particular. My sweet boy did this. He also added dad. He's the bald one in the photo. Notice we are holding hands. I asked him what that was above and he said "you know when the sun goes down and sometimes the sky is yellow and blue and pink." Yes, sweetie, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about.

Wednesday's Q&A, Aw crap, it's Friday: All about etiquette

Q. Why haven't you responded to my email/posted on my blog/posted on your blog? Isn't that the polite thing to do?
A. Let me describe the mood in my house: cranky, tired, busy, worn-out, exhausted, ornery. And that's not my kids I'm describing. So, I have not had time, energy or enthusiasm for any of this "fun-ness" of the WWW.

Q. What do you do when you are driving and someone lets you get in front of them in traffic?
A. If you don't know this you are banned from my blog. You are supposed to give them a "Thank You" wave. I hate when people don't do this.

Q. How long do you have to keep something someone gave you or your kids before you can trash it?
A. No really, I'm asking you. If my kids get some toy or "cute" knickknack or I get some "inspiring" quote to put up on my fridge, how long do I have to hold onto it out of obligation to them or my kids before I can toss it? Honestly, how many quotes can I put up on my fridge? I know I have to work on everything so will seeing a quote really help? I go home and toss it. (In case you think I'm just horrible, I don't ALWAYS do that. Sometimes I do keep it.) In my kids' case I usually do it that same evening while they are in bed. Even if it is some humongous teddy bear from their grandparents. Sorry, but no go. I've told you of my dislike for stuffed animals, right? (Don't worry, I'm not talking about anything any of you have ever given us. It's all those other people out there.)

Q. How should you react to someone else's out of control child at the grocery store?
A. Smile bemusedly and be grateful it's not your own. DON'T JUDGE. SERIOUSLY! Who are you anyway? There is one caveat-- if they are doing something the mom doesn't see and maybe they should know about b/c they might get hurt or someone else might. Otherwise, let them throw their tantrum and be glad you don't have to deal with it. For now.

Q. What do you do if your friend says something completely thoughtless and a little hurtful? Purely a hypothetical question, of course.
A. You have two options. 1) Talk to them about it--I'm sure "they" didn't mean it that way and would feel really bad knowing it hurt you and would apologize immediately. 2) Give "them" the benefit of the doubt and forgive and forget. "They" are a really nice person and probably didn't mean it like that. I'm saying this just in case. You never know.

Wednesday Q&A

Q. How long did it take for Mara to lose her first loose tooth?
A. 9 hours. She woke up in the morning, discovered her tooth was loose and immediately grabbed an apple and started eating it. Then she went for the floss and had Jason tie it around her tooth and the doorknob and slam the door. In the middle of this was me saying "Mara, just give it time, it will come out on its own when it's ready." She responded by saying "Mom, why does everything always have to be YOUR way." I proceeded to suck back my anger and respond in appropriate mother fashion. The second go-round of floss and slamming doors did the trick. Jason appropriately commented "She has the patience of a Gough." For any of you who are familiar with Jason's dad or any of those with Gough DNA, you'll know exactly what this means. Mara, of course, had to rub it in by saying "See mom!". And I smiled all the while thinking about how this will evolve in her teenage years. ("You don't know anything mom, I'm not going to listen to you, remember the time with my first loose tooth . . ."she has an incredible memory.)

Q. What did I lie about in my blog last week?
A. Well, you know how I was "jokingly" talking about my friendlessness? I made the comment that we would spend the days off from school all alone. Well, that was a lie. We actually were somewhat popular this weekend. I know, surprise, surprise. Thursday we did hang out by ourselves and went to the LDS Church History Museum to enjoy an interactive display "I am a Child of God." Then we went to Temple Square, the SLC Library and Jason's new office. Friday we went WITH FRIENDS (yeah) to Cabela's and Ikea. The kids had a blast and so did us moms. Thanks to Rachel. Then Saturday we went to Santaquin for a hayride, a trip to the pumpkin patch and a visit with the friendly Santaquin police officer who kindly broke into my car for me and got my keys out. We had icecream and even Shea made a guest appearance. I saw her long enough to bulldoze her with my unneccessary opinions and then we ended with nice dinner at Cracker Barrell. We had a blast with Morgan, Esther and Sariah. The only downside was when Eden walked in front of the waiter and was taken down and got a fat lip. Live and learn child! (JK) Then Monday we hiked up to Stuart Falls with Brooke and Kate. It was GORGEOUS, perfect weather, wonderful. The kids did great. At one point the wind blew and leaves were raining down. I can't describe the beauty of it. (I'll post pictures once I get some from Brooke--thanks Brooke.) SO thanks to all of my friends (right?) who humor me.

Q. Why is it that I am apparently unfit to be a mother of girls?
A. Here is a little background info: Today I was visiting with a couple ladies and one lady (mother to 4 girls) commented on how when her children were younger she worried that if she died who would do their hair. REALLY? I have NEVER even thought of that. NEVER. And I will still never worry about that. The other lady, who was recently out of town for 2 weeks, told us how her neighbor (sweet older lady) came over every morning before school to do her daughters' hair. (2 girls: 7,10) Here is a typical morning for me: "Mara go spray your hair with detangler and brush it." Done. Once every couple weeks I will actually "do" her hair. Not that I do that much. Today I was proud of myself for putting in ponytails, get this, with bows. She came home with her hair down. But, since I reminded her this morning that I had paid for those bows, she did bring them home. She's learning. Evidently I am missing some pertinent genetic information that makes me a girl. These women also discussed how long they take to curl/do their own hair and how their sons and husbands help hold curling irons and curl the back. It's not that I wasn't taught correctly. My first grade teacher nicknamed me "ribbon girl" because I always had ribbons in my hair. Thanks to my mom. Too bad she didn't pass that necessary information on to me. Because I am failing people. FAILING.

Wednesdays Q&A: The Side Effects of Moving

Q. Why are you so happy right now?

A. I just got back from a fun girls only Halloween party (thanks to the girls who went out of their way to make sure I came) and there is no school Thursday, Friday and Monday (and no piano lessons.) SO we can do whatever we want. We,meaning me and the kids, because I am so lonely.

Q. So, I noticed your profile says you are lonely, is that better now, what with the party and all?

A. Well, it's hard being the new person and feeling on the outside all the time. It's hard not having people to call and talk to and friends to call if you need someone to take your kids, or people to stop over and say hi. Or even just people who want to hang out with you. But, I know it will just take time and I have to be patient. Because, I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and gosh darnit, people like me!

Q. What would you be willing to sacrifice to have a friend in your new neighborhood, because you know everything requires some sacrifice?
A. Well, I would be willing to talk about scrapbooking, and organizing my home, and bunko, and Anita Stansfield novels and whether or not we are "trying" (I did have someone ask me that already, I DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU! But hey, I'll tell you if you'll be my friend.). Heck, I'd even read Twilight. If you'll be my friend. . . .
Q. Are you serious with all this stuff?

A. Well, I'm being a tad facetious. I am a little lonely but people have been really friendly and kind. It just takes time to find a new BFF, other than Jason of course (you know I love you) and I understand that. So for now, I'm doing a lot of Family Search Indexing! (See my previous post.)

Yes! It is 11:48 and I got in my Wednesday Q&A. My internet was down all day but I did it with 12minutes to spare. Good night. My only friends. Aaah, sweet cyberspace.

Here is a picture I stole from my sister's blog. I love it!

on why I love Family Search Indexing

So, for all you mormons and non-mormons alike, what is Family Search Indexing you ask? Well, in a nutshell (since this is about my understanding anyway) it is a database for anyone around the world to search for their ancestors. The LDS church sifts through millions of files of census (what's the plural form of that, censi?) marriage records, birth certificates, death certificates, and other pertinent data from all around the world and their volunteer indexers (such as me!) enter in the information, as best they can read it, to this searchable database. Each "batch" of information is looked at by 2 different volunteers and anything that they have discrepancies over the church's official geneology people will look at and make an assessment.
That's a basic understanding of it.
The LDS church makes a big deal out of reaching out to our ancestors and giving everyone the opportunity of receiving the true gospel. (As we feel it is.) Anyway, I've never been good at my geneology research and have always been one of those "a time and a season for everything" kind of people. You know, right now I'm dealing with my young kids but when I'm old and have lots of time on my hands (ha!) that's when I'll get around to it. But lately, I haven't felt that I could just let it go at that. Maybe it was my old stake president saying that family history work is for everyone and that to those who say "a time and a season blah blah" well, NOW is the time and season. And then my new bishop (pastor in nonmormon terms) saying that every member needs to do 1 batch a month of names.
And look at me, I've done it!
I know, unbelieveable.
So why do I love it?
Well, confession number 1-- I'm lazy.
Any excuse I have to sit at the computer for a half an hour is great to me. Plus, I can feel like I'm doing something good and think "extra blessings"! cha-ching! I am cashing in.
In trying to be a good Christian most things are a lifelong process and that can get tiring and sometimes a little disheartening. I'm still working on that humility thing. And that loving my neighbor. And forgiving. And I will. Again, and again, and again. But this is something I can say "check" done and feel like I'm taking a step forward (without taking two steps back.)
But I'm not truly that selfish. It really is awesome to think that maybe someone who is searching for their family can find them because I entered in their information. It is so neat to read the information about the people and wonder about the lives they led. When it comes down to it, it does feel good to be helping others.
So, I guess all that Christian mumbo jumbo of serving others and reaching out to your ancestors (you know "the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers") really does do you some good.
Now, what are you waiting for?

Wednesday's Q&A: The World According to Asher

Q. What is a windblower?
A. A Stormtrooper. Duh.

Q. What is a commandment from Jesus that you may not have heard yet?
A. Jesus has commanded us that we should take Karate so we can defend ourselves from bad guys. (So stated from Asher as we were heading to Karate.) So, be ye doers of the word and not just hearers only.

Q. What are Asher's favorite descriptive words?
A. Totally cool. As in "I only like things that are totally cool. Like Ironman. And Batman. And Power Rangers . . ." you get the idea.

Q. What do you do at 5 in the morning after you've had a nightmare?
A. Go downstairs and sneak some candy. That's a good way to get over it.
That's the most rational idea in the world.
Especially at 5 in the morning.
Too bad mom came to tuck you in and discovered.

Q. Where are we going this weekend?
A. Satan George (St. George in adult terms.)

Q. What are K swiss shoes?
A. Metal protectors. They have a metal shield on them . . .metal protectors. How can you not get this? It totally makes sense, in a 4 year old's mind.

Q. What did Asher say as he was talking in his sleep the other night?
A. Mara, Mara. (I couldn't tell if he was mad at her in his sleep or calling out to her.)

Q. What is Asher's nervous habit?
A. Twisting his hair. I hope it doesn't fall out soon. Maybe I should shave his head but then who knows what he would turn to.

Q. What did Asher want to do with his pet moth after it died?
A. Recycle it.

Q. What do I love most about Asher?
A. Hearing his prayers. He is the sweetest kid and he prays for everyone and everything. It can't help but bring me to tears. I love that boy!
on a recent field trip for preschool.

You Know You're Cheap if . . .

  • you take ribbons off wedding invitations to use in your girls' hair
  • you wash ziploc bags to use them over again (and over again, and over again, and over again)
  • you check a swim diaper to see if it has been "used to its full potential"(peed in) and if not, you re-use it (of course if it was stinky it's gone, I'm not that bad!)
  • you really have to think about an item of clothing if it is more than $5
  • you save the cardboard packaging from items to use for crafts/projects
  • you are still wearing clothes/shoes from High School
  • you hate to waste money on the nickel slots
  • you use both sides of every sheet of paper
  • you get excited over a good deal at the grocery store
  • even though you listen to/watch public stations ALL the time you give $15 annually, and are proud of yourself for doing that (but you don't donate to the policemen/firemen, sorry Shea)
  • 90% of all of your wardrobes are secondhand
  • you have 10 years of jello in your freezer because it was "on clearance"
  • you debate about buying some second hand underwear because you really need them to work out and forgot yours and don't want to buy some new ones
  • you are excited for receptions/company luncheons etc. for good, free food
  • you think caller ID and call waiting are for rich people

You use coupons
Check
You are constantly waiting for your rebate checks
Check
You go to company websites to get “exclusive free offers”
Check
You wait in line for stores to open for free offers
Check

As I'm sure you can tell this isn't some generic list. It's all me (except for one which I stole from someone else's blog, who shall remain nameless, can you guess which one?). Which of these do you subscribe to? What are some of your "cheapnesses"? Share them so I can use them as well!

Wednesday's Q&A

Q. I heard Jason got laid off today, is that true?
A. Yes, in a sense. He kind of volunteered. It's a long story.

Q. Why aren't you freaking out?
A. Because I am prepared to live off my food storage for the next year.
No, actually, he starts his great new job as Director of Marketing on Friday. (Read between the lines--better paying.)

Q. Wasn't he at that company forever?
A. Yes, for 10 1/2 years, almost our whole married life. But it is about time he had a chance to advance his career. He is so awesome and hardworking and talented.

Q. What's the catch?
A. He now commutes to Sandy. But it isn't too bad b/c the company runs a shuttle bus from Orem to Sandy.

Q. So what are you going to do with all the extra money?
A. Buy an extra propane tank, more batteries for my storage room and another water barrell and then save, save, save. Can you tell I'm a little freaked out by the current economy and all the latest weather fiascos?

Here's a recent photo of us at his "old" company. The grounds were gorgeous and they were a good company. We will miss it.

Wednesday's Q&A

Today's Q&A is short and sweet and something I get fairly often. I did have a whole bunch of ideas but decided to go with this.

Q: Are you and Jason going to have more kids/try for another boy/etc. and so on and so forth?
A: That's between us. Thanks for being interested but go rent your own porn movie. (Disclaimer: I do NOT support the porn industry and am ANTI-pornography.)

Sidenote: I dislike when people tell me they're "trying". What particularly are you trying to do? Ride a bike? That's what I'll think because I really don't want that image in my mind. You can tell me you want more children. But please don't tell me you're "trying". I know, I'm a prude.

Apparently at a family dinner in Canada (which we, of course, were not attending) Jason's family was discussing whether or not Jason and I were "done". Done with what exactly?
I had a piano student who expressed surprise if I wanted more (does that mean I'm not good with the ones I've got or that I seem overloaded) and well, we hear everything. SO, in case you were wondering, that's fine. Wonder all you want. Just don't ask me.

Superiority Complex

I don't really have a superiority complex. I'm well aware of my many faults. But unfortunately, I can come off that way when I criticize or find fault with others. I'm reading "How to Win Friends and Influence People" (I know, about time) and I came across this quote:
Every man is my superior in some way. In that, I learn of him. Emerson
We've had a lot of visitors lately, which I've loved. But sometimes when you get family together you can gossip and talk about others. I fell into that and feel awful for that. So, by way of public apology, let me tell of how I learn of my wonderful family members and their superiority to me. (Warning: this gets cheesy but don't let that make you think in anyway that it is insincere. I truly mean what I say.) And let me apologize up front for the length.
Debi: Debi is so amazing at multitasking. She teaches seminary, runs a Musical Theater Program, coordinates her children's schedules, cooks, cleans, runs and plays hostess to our gang when we come up. It's exhausting for me to think about.
Alex: What can you say about Alex other than he's just a stand up guy. He's such an all-around good guy. Seriously.
Johnny: Johnny put up with wrestling with my kids. A lot.
Josie: Josie was such a good sport about playing with Mara (and Jason). She took her on rides at Seven Peaks when I'm sure she wanted to do some of her own stuff. And she let Jason soak her in the water fight.

WARNING: This photo may be inappopriate for young children.

Darren: Darren is so good at taking care of Jason for me. He entertains him and takes him and gives me a break. It's so generous of him to do that and I know how hard it is for him. He's so considerate.
Susan: Now, when I say this, don't take this the wrong way but I know how popular that "Pioneer Woman" blog is. Well, Susan is totally a pioneer woman. She cans everything. Everything. Her food storage is well, I could live off it now and eat better than I do normally. She is talented in so many areas. And, she has four kids and you wouldn't know it to look at her. Damn! Sometimes, it's hard to stand next to her.
Morgan: Morgan is growing into such a gorgeous, sweet young woman. Tender, and softhearted. I can't wait to see the woman she will become.

Rick: Ahh Rick, I used to be a bit intimidated by Rick because he's the joker of the family (and you all know that I'm not witty) but he's grown on me and been so kind to us. He was so good with all the stress of the wedding and laid back about it all. He can joke but still be spiritual. I love that about him.
Sue: This woman will give you the shirt off her back. At Christmas I told her I liked a decoration she had. She came in SEPTEMBER and brought me one because she remembered that. She's always that way-- so giving. She overwhelms me with her generosity.
Aaron and Amy: Well, I didn't really interact with Aaron and Amy but I am SO glad they got married in UT so we could be there. Thanks for being so considerate of us. (Well, I know it wasn't really for us in particular but nevertheless, I'm so glad we could be a part of it.)
Jessica and Matt;Lisa and Austin: I decided to group these two couples together because they are both darling couples, the girls gorgeous and the guys handsome and they are the BEST about playing with the kids. They have way more energy than I do. They are even willing to take Eden when she's fussy and calm her down by running up/down the stairs. Jessica is so like her mom in helping others and Lisa is so sweet and kind. Matt and Austin are fun and sweet to their wives. I need pictures of the girls' faces so you can see how beautiful they are.

Adam: Adam. I talked to Adam more in this weekend than the previous 11 years of being married into this family. And I discovered that he's not a "whigger" as Jason calls him. (Don't blame me--it's Jason's word.) He's actually very funny and genuine and get this, normal. He doesn't growl or bite. Contrary to public opinion.
Adison: Adison likes to act like he's all tough and whatnot (which he TOTALLY is) but he actually can be very sweet and a softie. (But don't tell him I told you that. He does not want that going around.)
Rachel: Poor Rachel has to be the baby sister to the whole bunch. But she is so goodnatured about it. To have all those big brothers teasing you would probably make you want to go on a killing spree but she puts up with it and laughs it off well. I can definitely learn from her.

Jenna: Jenna amazes me with her strength in getting through whatever trials are put in her way. She has such a quiet determination about her.
Kevin: Kevin takes care of Jenna wonderfully. As a sister that's what I want for her and I know he wants her best interests. I'm so glad she has him.

Wednesday's Q&A: A Special Utah Driver's Edition

For those of you who don't know or who have never been to Utah--Utah drivers can be a little scary. Just read and you'll see.

Q. How many times have I been brighted in the car pool lane to move over?
A. Twice. Both times I was going probably 4 miles over the speed limit. I’m sorry, I’m not going to break the law so you can break the law. Seriously? You want me to move over when it is a double line so you can speed faster? If you want to speed, you cut out. (Oh and BTW I should add that there has only been a carpool lane in UT for maybe 2 years.)

Q. How many times have I flipped off a driver in Utah?
A. Once. I was young and stupid, but boy did I learn my lesson. Jason was driving just south of BYU campus and a car was riding us and flashing their brights. Then, they passed us. Note: This is on a residential street. So, Jason was annoyed and passed them back and I flipped them off. Again, need I mention that I was stupid. Well, they followed us. When we stopped at a red light, two guys got out of their car and came up to us. Let me describe what they looked like and I think you’ll understand their type: Short, stocky, muscular and get this, in overalls, with NO shirt underneath. That’s right. Guys. In overalls. With no shirts underneath. We quickly locked the doors and Jason rolled down his window an inch. (There is no shame in protecting yourself people. Especially from meatheads.) The guys got in his face and eventually said “You’re lucky your girlfriend is in the car.” Wife. Whatever. ANYWAY, long story short, that is one of the many dumb things I did. When I was much, MUCH younger.

Q. What annoys me more, people who speed or people who drive under the speed limit?
A. My answer should be people who speed because they put everyone else at danger, BUT it’s actually people who drive under the speed limit. Today I was on a 35 mph street and we weren’t even going 25. Get with it people. Uhhhhhhhhh. Should I share another story? Why not, you can always tune out if you don’t want to read this. One time I was heading to BYU campus(again) and was behind a slow car and saying my typical—come on Grandpa. Then the same Grandpa took the parking space I spotted but luckily I found another. (Parking there is a pain.) Turns out, it was Henry B. Eyring and his wife. You’d think I would have learned my lesson and have more patience with slow drivers . . .

Common Stylist "Compliments"

I just got my hair done this week.

Nothing exciting. A trim and I went darker. (I need something closer to my natural color so I won't have obvious roots when it grows out.)

Anyway, as I was there and talking to my friend Jenn about the many hair colors of ME she said "You look good in any color". Now, not that I disbelieve her, because she is a very genuine person, and I have to say I DO look good in ANY color. It just made me think later Do stylists really mean it when they say that, or is that one of those -you say that to everyone-things

Here are a few hair stylist "compliments" that can make you wonder--

1. You'd look good in any color.

2. No, that doesn't make you look like a boy. (It goes with number 3 . . .)

3. Short hair fits you.

4. That cut's just right for your bone structure (face shape, etc.).

5. No, it doesn't look too young for you.

6. ME: "I was thinking of doing . . . " STYLIST: "I Love it!"

And last, but a personal favorite

7. Not many people could pull that off, but you totally do.

Have you ever heard any of those and knew you were in trouble? What have you heard that's made you second guess how good you actually look?

PS Jenn--no offense to you. I think you're awesome and TOTALLY believe you. It just some other members of your trade.

Wednesday's Q&A

It’s a little long but there were so many exciting things in my life this week (HA) that I had a lot to write about. I’m sure you’ll agree.

Q: What momentous thing happened this week on our street?
A: The port-a-potty that has been there since we moved in (3 mos.ago) is finally gone.
Hip Hip . . .

Q: Which one of my children writes like Da Vinci?
A: Asher. See the picture for proof. Apparently after doing his writing practice this morning he decided to use the other side of his brain for a bit of a challenge. He gets it from me. “Research suggests that the ability to do mirror writing is probably inherited and caused by atypical language organization in the brain.[1]. It is also hypothesized to be a X-linked dominant condition.[““(Wikipedia)

Q: What store grand opening am I totally excited about? (Hint: I hate shopping so it’s nothing like Nordstrom or whatnot.)
A: Sunflower Farmer’s Market in Orem. Local and Organic food/produce at CHEAP prices. Now THAT is something I get excited about.

Q: If Jason’s cell phone is sitting on the counter and ringing while he is the hot tub should I
1. Answer it, even if it is old HS buddies who clearly do not want to talk to me or else they would have called our home number, and what do they really have to say to me anyway
Or
2. Leave it to go to voicemail, like a good wife
A: The correct answer is #1. I answer it because I would rather do that than hear the kids “Mom, the phone’s ringing, answer it, mom, mom, the phone, it’s ringing answer it” and so on and so forth for five rings and the beep of voicemail.

Q: Is it safe to eat pita bread that has a date on it of 8/5 (I’m guessing that’s the day it was made) and has a few mold spots but I just rip off and eat the parts that don’t have mold on them?
A: Apparently so. I ate some Monday evening as a late night snack with some chicken salad. Since I felt fine Tuesday, I had some more of the same Tuesday morning for breakfast. I know, I have healthy eating habits. I told you I like food and apparently I don’t have a discriminating palate. And strong stomach acid.

Q: How did school pictures go this week?
A: As to be expected. I was very excited because I actually remembered that there were school pictures. I pulled Mara into the bathroom to curl her hair and she started crying before I did a thing. It’s the ONE day a year that I will curl your hair daughter, suck it up. Anyway, in the crying and moaning she moved and the curling iron brushed by her ear for a nanosecond and the crying went up a notch. As for me, my first picture I was talking and I have an expression of “I won the what?” on my face. The second one was ok but they had no mirror to look in beforehand. If I had, I would have noticed my hair sticking out and would have fixed it.

In case you’re wondering yes, I had school pictures, for my offical PTA badge. That’s right. I’m official. I don’t know what I’m doing yet. But’s it’s official that I’m official.

Nadal's nasties

I love watching tennis.
Which shouldn't surprise you all since I am such an accomplished tennis player myself. (sarcasm)
So, in watching the US Open, how many times did I get to see Nadal (Rafael Nadal from Spain, was ranked No. 1, get with it y'all) pick his underwear out from his bum?
ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED SIXTY SEVEN
I did the math. Well, I used the calculator on my computer to do the math.
That's one for every single point.
EVERY SINGLE POINT I saw that man pick his bum.
Nadal, you are (well, were) ranked no.1 in the world in tennis. I think you should know by now which underwear not to wear.
Or do you like having everyone watch?

I wanted to post a photo of said picking but didn't know if people would be offended or if kids would be watching. But for those who really want to see it, here is an awesome picture of it. And by awesome I mean disgusting, hilarious and obnoxious.
http://sports.webshots.com/photo/1363822360054837740dtsjzO

PS I did a google search to find an image and there were so many comments with people annoyed by this. One person actually asked if he wears a G-string. Maybe?
Here's a few amusing articles regarding this phenomenon.

Wednesday's Q&A

A Weekly Feature (don't I sound official)

Q. What type of parent takes their 10 yr. old daughter(an estimate but a good one)on a motorcycle on the freeway?
A. The type of parent that rides a motorcycle on the freeway without shoes on. Yes, I really saw this BUT they did have helmets so they are protecting the most important parts, I guess.

Q. In 8 days of school how many times has Mara forgot/lost something?
A. 5 times. Lunch box 2 times. Library book once. Jacket once. "Forgot" she even brought a lunch so had to get school lunch on credit, once. (my personal favorite.)

Q. Which foods are very deceiving to kids in that they appear to be yummy but actually are disgusting?
A. Cocoa powder, vanilla, chicken buillion cubes and the most disgusting one: shortening. I have personal experience in trying each of these as a kid because I thought they looked/smelled so good.

Social Anthrax

I played a little game of Apples to Apples in my head to describe the horrible social skills I have, and this is what I came up with. How honest should I be on my blog without people being deterred? I guess we'll see.
I am Social Anthrax.
I don't mean that I KILL, yo, in social situations.
Not like that. No. I mean, I'm horrible.
I talk too much.
I'm too opinionated,
too open,
too blunt,
too much of everything I shouldn't be.
After every social situation I am kicking myself for talking too much and not thinking about what I say. Now, I don't resign myself too this. My constant goal is to talk less and listen more. But, alas . . .
One of my biggest fears is that my kids will be socially inadequate because of me. I worry about that. Way too much.
Good news.
Mara came home from her first day of school with a new best friend. She had lunch with 4 friends. FOUR! I wish I could have lunch with four friends.
So, there is hope. Apparently, the anthrax letter from God was only meant for me.

Olympic Thoughts

As I've done nothing but watch the olympics. (Seriously, for breakfast yesterday I had leftover refried beans and rice.) I'm sure all of you have also, although possibly not to the same extent. So here are a few of my random thoughts.
*I'm glad I'm not the only girl who looks like a guy in a speedo, cap and goggles.

*News commentator quotes about Michael Phelps "He's got good racing blood" (What is he, a horse to breed?) and "He's harvesting golds." What's he planting to do that? I could use a little of that.

*I hope I'm not the only one who cried when Nastia Lukin won the gold. (I like Shawn Johnson but LOVE Nastia. She's so graceful and beautiful.)
*Dara Torres is literally supermom. She's 41 and swimming in the Olympics! She has a 2 year old, NO stretch marks and man muscles. (Like most of the female swimmers.)

*I've probably gained weight this week. I've joined the millions of certified couch potatoes. Doritos and all. No man muscles for me.

*If I were a Chinese gymnast, people would probably question my age as well. What with the underveloped physique and the apparent young face. (Someone on Sunday told me I looked 16. What?? You've got to be kidding me!)

*Boxing, Wrestling and Baseball/Softball are still boring, even it is the Olympics. I mean, come on, it's like 2 minutes between each pitch, at least.

*I may get negative comments for this but does anyone else harbor the secret fear that Michael Phelps may fail a drug test? I love him, I love watching him win, it's amazing, maybe too amazing?

Favorite Things by Eden

Yes, I know.
Her birthday was almost 2 months ago.
We never had cake.
She opened 2 presents. (One from her Nana and one from Uncle Seth and Megan. They get bonus points. )
But, as she is now one, I must do something to recognize all that she is so here goes. . .

(Hum "Favorite Things" from Sound of Music please . . .)

Pulling out clean dishes from the dishwasher

Tearing down towers made by my bro Asher

Eating the dog's food but spitting my own

These are a few of my favorite things
(She dumped out the dog water and is drinking it off the floor.)

playing with tampons and splashing in toilets

pulling the clothes off and eating my barrets

pouring out spices and extracts and oils

These are a few of my favorite things
(She opened the vanilla and emptied it on the floor.)

When the door opens

then I head out

to the garage alone

I climb on the tricycle heading downtown

escaping to my

FREEDOM!

11 Years and Counting . . .

Last night as I was going to sleep I did the math. In 8 years, I will have been married for half my life. Crazy! I don't know exactly what to think of that but it is hard to think of my adult life without Jason. I know there are so many things I would not have been able to do if it wasn't for him. (Not counting having kids!) So here is a top ten list for my husband--warning: cheesy alert
10. He has great fashion sense. Don't you love that shirt? Don't you wish your husband could have one?

9. He's the best at playing monster with the kids. (And it saves me from doing it, I'm a killjoy.)

8. He provides me with a lavish lifestyle. All the DI and Savers clothes I could ever want!

7. He's given me 3 redheaded children. Blondes may be beautiful but redheads are remembered!

6. He's clean. Good thing! 9 times out of 10 his closet is cleaner than mine. Okay, probably more like 10 out of 10 but for that rare chance . . .

5. He's a hard worker. Because of him I don't have to hire ---a water softener guy, a hot tub mechanic, an electrician, a plumber, a carpenter, a carpet cleaner, and so on. The list goes on and on.

4. He's a great dad and gives me LOTS of breaks. Because we all know I need it!

3. He's handsome and in good shape. I wouldn't want redheaded kids if I didn't think they were cute!

2. He's an excellent musician. But he lets me feel like I'm the better of the two by pretending he can't read music!

1. He makes me laugh. You can't make it through life without this.

I'm SO glad we're in this together and so grateful I have him.

Happy Anniversary J!

PS I just thought of an honorable mention that I couldn't forget. Jason is the BEST about going out for late night runs. I know that sounds insignificant but I LOOOOOOVE that about him. Whenever I'm jonesin' for some Salt and Vinegar Chips and Cottage Cheese (don't knock it 'til you've tried it) or whatever, he's so great about getting it.

Cooking Blunders

I cook a lot. At least 2 meals a day every day of the year. That's a lot. And I consider myself fairly competent in the kitchen. But alas, I am not perfect. (Despite the lingering nickname from my 3rd grade teacher of Little Miss Perfect.) So, every once in a while, even I mess up. Just a bit. This evening as I was making THE Broccoli Beef with leftover roast beef, as I had on that infamous evening and I couldn't help but think of one of my worst and most memorable mess-ups. It was all because I was talking on the phone. Surprise, surprise. I'm afraid I will miss out on some big opportunity in life because I will be talking to someone. I remember it well, and for those of you who don't know me well, I don't remember anything well. It was a Tuesday night, I had book club that evening and was making the aforementioned broccoli beef. Everything was done. Almost. The rice was keeping warm in the rice cooker, the broccoli beef was on the stove simmering nicely. I reached down into my cupboard to put in the LAST ingredient. The cornstarch. Which really isn't even essential. I have Clabber Girl Baking Powder and Clabber Girl Cornstarch in the same size container, same labels, everything (although the Baking Powder is 5 lbs and cornstarch is 3.5, who would've known it takes up more space and weighs less?) you can figure out where I'm going with this. I get my 2 Tablespoons, put them in the pan and instead of it thickening, it starts bubbling. Baking Powder. Ugh. It tasted awful. I had to throw the whole pan in the garbage. That hurt. I hate wasting food. Jason was happy though. He got to run to Del Taco for Tuesday Taco night, and he loves it. (I don't get it, crappy Mexican food, huh?)

So that was the memorable event. Just to think about it bugs me because I wasted all that food.

So, what are some of your more memorable cooking blunders?

PS And Seth, you better post!

They have eyes but they just can't see

Before you think that I'm talking about some species of snake let me tell you I'm talking about men. And kids as well. Have you ever noticed how you ask them to look for something, in plain sight, and yet they just "can't" see it. (Or choose not to.) I was reminded of this when I was shopping and came upon this teenage boy in the freezer section who was on the phone to his mom.

Boy: Mom, are you sure it's here because I can't find it.

Mom: ??? (I don't know, I wasn't that close!)

Boy: Mom, it's not here, I'm looking everywhere. It's NOT HERE.

Me: Excuse me, sorry to interrupt but can I help you.

Boy: Yes, I'm trying to find the sweet corn.

Me: open the door DIRECTLY in front of the boy and grab a bag of white corn, at eye level Is this what you need?

Boy: Mom, is it supersweet white corn, OK. Click

Boy: Thanks.

I feel bad making generalizations but I've really noticed a pattern.
Since I'm talking about shopping, shoplifting must be really bad lately because at Albertson's they now put a sticker on every shopping bag and non-bagged item you purchase that says "Thank you for shopping with us today" which is obvious for "This item has been paid for." And at Walmart the "greeter" accosts people as they are leaving and looks at their receipt and then goes through the items in the bags. Next thing you know, they'll install the machines like at the airport and make everyone walk through security to leave. So good luck to any old people trying to steal batteries!

On a different note

Doomed or Destined
Today in church I was asked to be the Children's Chorister. (Primary Chorister in mormon speak.) It may be a new record in that I attended the full church meetings one time before being called to help with the kids. I can't quite figure out if either I did something really bad in a previous existence and so am doomed to repeat the same things over and over or that I am just destined to this because of some special skills. I guess it depends on your perspective.

On a different note

Defying Modern medicine
Happy birthday today to my Father-in-law who is now 79. It's amazing that he has lived to such a ripe old age when you consider that he exists on soda, cheese, pickles, cheetos, hershey bars and fried chicken and his daily exercise regiment consists of pulling himself out of bed with his walker and heading over to the recliner for a hard day's worth of TV watching. It truly is a miracle that he has lived this long and I'm grateful that my kids get to know him because you really haven't lived until you've experienced a little Delbert!

On a different note

Decisions, decisions
My kids got haircuts this week thanks to the talented and skilled Jenn. Mara is still getting a bob to even out her haircut she gave herself and Asher has the nice buzz for the summer. (I couldn't get the kids to stop being silly for the picture.)

But what do you do with a baby whose hair is a little longish in the back,

a little baldish in the front (she was mad b/c she wanted the camera)
and a bit sticky-outish on the sides?

On a different note

Delivery time
We've been doing a lot of furniture shopping and we will be getting a dresser delivered and finally have our furniture situation figured out. In a new house it is always hard to see what fits where and we've had to sell a few pieces and then purchase new ones. My kids have enjoyed the shopping as you can see from the attached picture. I found this in the car and Mara must have drawn it as we were heading to the pictured location. Maybe we've done a little too much shopping as this appears to be their new "home away from home."
So here is a little update on some of our recent (boring) happs. What's up with you?

Music for the Masses? Apparently.

I don't want to make my blog all about my children but I know people like hearing Mara stories.

In unpacking Mara found a cute little walkman. And when I say walkman, I mean the original 80s walkman. You know, cassette player. Before CD players, before MP3 players and way before IPODs, there were tapes.
Anyway, as you all know, she loves music so we tried to find some age appropriate tapes for her to listen to that were "cool", just as she requested.

Unfortunately the music we picked out wasn't "cool" enough so she went to find her own, unbeknownst to me. Today she was rocking out to something so I asked her what it was. She said she found it in a box somewhere and she really liked it. (Big surprise.) I popped it out and lo and behold . . .

Apparently.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Sorry it's been so long. We have had a lot of family time lately. And as family time goes, it's always a little up and down. So here is a short synopsis.

The Good: Jason's sister, husband and son came down to deliver their son to the LDS Missionary Training Center. He will be heading to San Bernardino California for 2 years to serve the Lord. Good for him. To him, it is a foreign country. Alberta Canada to California USA. Culture shock. Anyway, it was SO great having them be our first visitors in our home, play cards with us (Jason showed off his skills) and go to a Canada Day party. We loved having them and it was such an enjoyable visit. (This was taken at Jason's work. The grounds are beautiful.)

The Bad: The day Jason's sister left my sister Kate and her darling family came. That's not the bad part. I love her to death and she is SOOO awesome and amazing. I can't say enough good things about her. Here comes the bad part. They stayed for a few days before moving to Arizona for the next 4 years while her husband does medical school. Then they have residency, army service and so on. Who knows when we will live close to eachother again. I can't think about it too much or I'll start bawling. I move to a new neighborhood and then my family moves out of town. I'm really all alone. Nothing better happen to Jason. (You'll have to excuse my dress in the picture. Kate wanted to make sure that she was the best looking girl in the room on her wedding day. Well done.)

The Ugly: I feel bad mentioning this but it's the truth and unfortunately I don't shy away from it. We went to a family reunion for my dad's family. Not bad. BUT. My grandmother is a crotchety, bitter old woman. I'm not saying that to be rude. It is simply the truth. As much as we can, we avoid being around her. So why did I make the effort? I'm still trying to figure that out. I did a lot of soul searching on the way home (and crying) to try and feel better about all my interactions with her and to feel like I am a good person despite the horrible treatment. The good thing about being around her is it makes you realize what happens if you hold on to all the bad things in your life and never let them go. I feel bad for her because she has had a hard life and even worse still that she has yet to find a way to let go and enjoy life. Too bad for her. (Notice how me and the kids are dressed in red, white and blue but not Jason. That dang Canadian!)

As for me, I'm pretty lucky with my three gorgeous kids, great husband and nice house. I'm choosing to look on the bright side of things. With that said, I enjoyed my family time!

Tagged--My Guy

So Colleen tagged me on this and since I haven't blogged recently and I'm exhausted, it saves me from thinking of something original. (Again, read my blog title, if you're looking for something exciting and new, this isn't the place.)

What is his name? ~ Jason Tyler Gough
How long have you been together? ~ We’ve been married 10 5/6 years…
How long did you date? ~ …and dated for about 7 months.
How old is he? ~ 35
Who eats more? ~ You know, although he outweighs me by 70 pounds, I totally eat more than him. I can eat a lot! Can’t you tell by looking at me?
Who said I love you first? ~ Honestly, I actually don’t remember. Is that bad? It just feels like we’ve loved eachother forever. (OK, I was totally being sarcastic with that.)
Who is taller? ~ He is. I would never marry a guy shorter than me.
Who is smarter? ~ Well… I don’t want to make him look bad but we’ll just say that I tutored him to help him finish his final college course to get his Bachelor’s (Math). BUT he is way more creative and artistic than me!
Who does the dishes? ~ Both of us, but he does them more often. I figure that I make the meals, he can clean up after them. Fair trade. I’m all about equal rights!
Who pays the bills? ~ The computer. We mostly do everything online. He pays the tithing though, does that count?
Who mows the lawn? ~ We both do. In all our married life I’ve probably done it more but last year he did it a lot because I had a baby. That’s fair, right?
Who cooks dinner? ~ I do. Always. Jason cooks Ramen, Spaghetti and Macaroni. And sometimes he even messes Easy Mac up by not reading the directions.
Who kissed who first? ~ He kissed me first.
Who asked who out first? ~ We kind of hung out with mutual friends. But he called me first.
Who proposed? ~ He did, of course!
Who has more siblings? ~ I do. 10 kids in my family. Not too many people can beat that. But he has 6 which isn’t too small either.
Who wears the pants? ~ Again, equal rights. I think it’s pretty equal. I like to feel like I’m in charge but I like to let him make decisions sometimes and have a say so that it feels equal! Here's a picture of us from last year when we went to see the Jazz in the Playoffs against the Warriors. We still have fun together. Can you tell I'm 9 mos. pregnant in this?
I tag: Kate, Ari, and Jenn. Go get 'em girls.

A few life lessons from the past few days

I actually shouldn't be doing this but I need a break so I thought I'd jot down a few thoughts.

1. The only person who cares if you skip your baby's birthday is you.

2. As much as you can, avoid West Valley City, UT. Never attempt to purchase anything from anyone there. It's notorious for having the worst crime in all of UT and yet we thought we could trust an online seller to purchase a fridge. After renting a U-haul, driving up there, spending .70 per mile on top of gas costs; it was nothing like they said. We came back empty handed. Oh wait, no we didn't, the guy had thrown the front grill from the fridge in the back of the U-Haul so later that evening we got a phone call full of expletives about not purchasing the fridge and "stealing" the grill. He very kindly asked for our address to come pick it up. We very kindly offered to mail it.

3. When you buy a new house, measure everything. Measure to make sure the fridge fits.

4. Never assume that there is a standard size for anything. Door sizes are NOT standard. You can't replace doors when they don't have the size you want. Sanding down 15 doors to size is not an option. You know what they say about assuming. . . .(you make an a*$ out of U and ME)

5. Again with the assumptions, will I never learn. Never assume that someone will call people to remind them to show up and help you move. When it is 9:30 on Saturday and no one has shown up when you were supposed to start at 9, you realize quickly how stupid you were to make that assumption.

Well, here is a beginner's list for you. You can learn more from my own experiences later. Back to work!

The voyeur in us all

I enjoy reading my friends' blogs. I don't really read many random blogs from people I don't know. But sometimes, the voyeur in me comes out and I love to bloghop. (Is that a real word?) You know, you read a friend's blog and then you see a link to someone on their blog that you might kind of know so you link over and read it. You feel a little sneaky reading their personal information without them knowing and it feels a little funny like when you would read people's notes in junior high or their diaries while they were out of the room. Not like I ever did that. Oh no, not me. As much as we don't admit it, I think within us all there is a bit of a voyeur. That's why blogging and reality TV are so popular. We like to watch other people's lives maybe to feel better about our own or to suspend reality for a little and wish it were us. Either way, I think it's completely harmless. So, for those of you that are reading my blog without my knowledge, go right ahead. It's pretty boring anyway. And as for me, I will continue to read those blogs of my friends' friends and enjoy the adrenaline rush as if I'm doing something naughty! Heaven knows I'm a perfectly perfect person everyday (yes, perfect) and can enjoy a little freedom from myself every once in a while.

No, it's not a wig

Thanks to Jenn who is SO awesome at hair.

P.S. Yes, that is my stalker in the background.
