You Know You're Cheap if . . .

  • you take ribbons off wedding invitations to use in your girls' hair
  • you wash ziploc bags to use them over again (and over again, and over again, and over again)
  • you check a swim diaper to see if it has been "used to its full potential"(peed in) and if not, you re-use it (of course if it was stinky it's gone, I'm not that bad!)
  • you really have to think about an item of clothing if it is more than $5
  • you save the cardboard packaging from items to use for crafts/projects
  • you are still wearing clothes/shoes from High School
  • you hate to waste money on the nickel slots
  • you use both sides of every sheet of paper
  • you get excited over a good deal at the grocery store
  • even though you listen to/watch public stations ALL the time you give $15 annually, and are proud of yourself for doing that (but you don't donate to the policemen/firemen, sorry Shea)
  • 90% of all of your wardrobes are secondhand
  • you have 10 years of jello in your freezer because it was "on clearance"
  • you debate about buying some second hand underwear because you really need them to work out and forgot yours and don't want to buy some new ones
  • you are excited for receptions/company luncheons etc. for good, free food
  • you think caller ID and call waiting are for rich people

You use coupons
Check
You are constantly waiting for your rebate checks
Check
You go to company websites to get “exclusive free offers”
Check
You wait in line for stores to open for free offers
Check

As I'm sure you can tell this isn't some generic list. It's all me (except for one which I stole from someone else's blog, who shall remain nameless, can you guess which one?). Which of these do you subscribe to? What are some of your "cheapnesses"? Share them so I can use them as well!

Ha ha, hilarious list.....it is sad that I think about whether to buy clothing over $5 - especially for the kids. I am proud to be 'cheap'! I have noticed little girls wearing ribbon from gifts, but my girl won't wear any.....doesn't mean I haven't kept them though (ha ha).

I hope you stole the underwear one because that is NASTY! I like free stuff but I'm nowhere as frugal as you are. I bought $100 jeans remember. I'm a sucker. We used to wash our ziplock bags but over the years I've broke Ryan of that habit. I remember one year when times were lean, I donated to the KBYU station and Ryan had a fit. So I think he is cheaper than you.

My cheapness is, I only buy clothes on sale. Doesn't mean they are less than $5 but I won't buy full price. We also don't buy anything we can't pay for. Well unless it has a no interest deal. Like our computer was no interest for 2 years so we just paid it off slowly. When we were younger we did a lot of cheap things.

I'm not really cheap, but I do rip my dryer sheets in half. And I'm starting to pay more attention to sales and coupons! It's a process, right?

Your list cracks me up. I used to be super cheap, but I'm guilty of splurging more often these days. Some of the ways I'm still cheap: I buy Halloween and Christmas decorations after the holiday for 75%-90% off, I use dryer sheets twice, I buy clothes on sale, etc. Here's one example I'm proud of. I bought some $30 jeans on sale for under $2 at the mall!

And I, too, buy most of my clothes second hand. Lately I'm really into Plato's Closet and Pibb's Exchange. I have a lot more luck at those places than Savers.

I like this post. I may have to steal your idea. (o:

I totally save all the ribbons too! And I would say lots of your things aren't cheap -- they're eco-friendly! We tear wipes in half if it's only a wet diaper we're changing. We do rebates, "fatwallet" and "slickdeals." I take things out of people's garbage. I don't buy tissue, toilet paper works fine. We reuse bags and foil and shipping envelopes. My husband used to reuse his dental floss every night for a week until the hygenist told him to stop. When we had mice in our garage last winter and they got into our 72 hours kits, I was washing everything off and Nate made me throw it all away. He said, "We're not that poor!" Thinking back on it, that was pretty gross, I'm glad I threw it away.

I haven't re-used dryer sheets. MAN! I've been wasting sheets all this time. That's hilarious about your 72 hour kits. I get pretty grossed out about stuff like that. And Shea-- you were right, the underwear thing was NOT mine. I won't say whose it was . . .I totally reuse shipping envelopes. Floss, not so much. Julie, where is Pibbs? I go to plato's closet, I saw your flyers there. (Good for you.) Keep em coming people.

Well, I am glad to know the underwear one wasn't yours. I reuse envelopes or boxes for shipping, I use ribbons from gifts for my kids hair (when they actually let me use ribbons in their hair). I think I am selectively cheap - we were so dirt poor in our early married years that I got tired of always scrimping, so I don't do as much now, but I still have a lot of things I won't pay much money for.

I reuse swim diapers too, if they only worm them for say a half hour, those things are expensive.

Pibb's is in Sugar House next to the liquor store. (You could find the address doing a Google search). I LOVE it there. It's an alternative version of Plato's. I think you'd like it.

I wonder when I will stop getting excited about free food. Maybe when grocery prices go down! The only problem with saving so many ribbons, paper towel rolls, cardboard, etc for crafts is that my apartment gets crowded really fast. So I save stuff and if I haven't used it at a certain point I throw it out.
